Week of November 14, 2011

Dear COES Families,

School will not be in session all next week – Monday and Tuesday are furlough days and Wednesday through Friday is the Thanksgiving holiday.

We have a total of five furlough dates when students are in session – the remaining dates are Monday, January 9; Friday, March 23; and Friday, May 25.

Two additional furlough dates have been added for school employees – just prior to the start of school, and again at the end of the school year.

This is a result of state budget cuts and reduced school funding from Sacramento.

This translates to nearly 30 hours of lost instruction – an incredible disservice to our students.

Please email, call, or write to our elected leaders in Sacramento and let them know our students deserve better.  Our state government needs to make school funding our top priority!

Letter writing would be a great exercise for our upper grade students – and make quite an impression on our elected officials!

School resumes Monday, November 28.

Please join us for our first Dine and Donate at Chevy’s restaurant on Monday, November 14.

When you bring the small flier (the school copies are blue, but any color is fine), Chevy’s will donate 25% of your meal purchase.  Additional fliers are available in the office.

This applies to both dine-in and take-out. Chevy’s will honor these flier’s from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. We look forward to seeing you there!

This Wednesday morning is “Walk and Roll Day” – Rain or shine!

Students who ride their bicycles or walk to school will receive a prize located by the front gate. This program is sponsored by the Napa County Office of Education.

This will become a monthly routine and we hope to have the majority of our students participate!

Our next School Site Council meeting takes place this Thursday, November 17 at 3 p.m. in the library.

We will be reviewing STAR data from last spring and make recommendations for our Single Plan for Student Achievement.

Site Council meetings are open to the public.

This Friday, November 18 will be a BIG day at Canyon Oaks!

1. Student Council announced this Friday is Hat Day. Students may show their school spirit by wearing a hat of any kind.

2. Report Cards go home at the end of the day on Friday.

3. Our BEST assembly is Friday morning: K-2 is from 8:25 – 8:40 and gr. 3-5 is from 8:45 – 9:00 a.m.

4. Movie Night takes place at 7 p.m. in the Multi-Use Room. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. We are requesting a $2 per person donation. We will be showing “Cars 2″. Food will be available for sale.

Have a great week!
