Earthquake Update 8.25.14

August 25th, 2014

Dear COES Families,

NVUSD officials announced today that school will remain closed on Tuesday, August 26th.

Below is the NVUSD Press Release:

Our thoughts are with our friends and neighbors who have been affected by yesterday’s earthquake. Our community is responding together and we are working with the city and County to ensure a coordinated response.

Our first priority is the safety of our students and staff.

Our facilities teams immediately began to evaluate the status of our buildings. Professional engineering staff have inspected 2/3 of our schools and found no structural damage. The remaining 1/3 of the school will have structural reviews completed by Tuesday at noon. We will allow students to return to classrooms only when we can verify that the classrooms are safe.

With that goal in mind, there will be no school in session tomorrow, Tuesday August 26. We are asking teachers and support and office staff to report to their work sites at their regular times. The District’s child care program will be closed as well.  We will make a determination about Wednesday’s school day on Tuesday, and will announce that at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.   The following organizations are again providing no-cost child care:

  • Boys & Girls Club of Napa Valley (both Napa and American Canyon locations) – more information below
    7:30 AM – 6 PM

(707) 255-8866

  • Napa Parks & Recreation
    Las Flores Community Center
    8:30 AM – 3 PM
    (707) 257-9529

The Red Cross community emergency center is located at Crosswalk Community church, 2590 First Street, across from the Outlets. NO emergency shelters are located at schools.

We are committed to returning our students to their classroom as safely and quickly as possible.

For more information, please visit the NVUSD website.

The next  Boxtops deadline in March 1st

Please turn in your Boxtops over the next few weeks.  Canyon Oaks has already earned over $900 this year!

Also, we have collected over $300 from families using the Amazon link located on our home page.

Thank you for your ongoing support!

We are still in need of volunteer crossing guards!

We are very grateful for the support of Mr. Ponce, a Canyon Oaks parent who has been monitoring the crosswalk at Silver Oak and White Oak during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up.

We still need more volunteers to ensure crosswalk safety occurs all week long!

If you can support any morning or afternoon – one or more days a week, please contact Mr. Knox.

Have a great week!
