Dear COES Families,

I hope you all enjoyed a restful spring break!

Here are the highlights for this week:

1. Our English Learner Advisory Committee (E.L.A.C.) meeting scheduled for tomorrow, April 3rd is now cancelled.  We will inform you of the May date soon.

2. Our Coffee Fundraiser ends this Wednesday, April 4th. Please turn in all orders by Wednesday. Orders will be available for pick-up by April 25th.

3. There is no school this Friday, April 6.

Last, the date for our Science Fair Extravaganza, originally scheduled for May 30th, has now been moved to Tuesday, May 29th. Please note this date change on the school calendar.

Dear COES Families,

This is a short week due to the Furlough Day (no school) on Friday, March 23.

This will lead into our Spring Break all next week, with students returning on Monday, April 2.


Thank you to those families using eScrip at Safeway. Please follow the attached link that shows how much was donated to Canyon Oaks in 2011.

Your support with eScrip is greatly appreciated!


In addition to eScrip, please consider supporting Canyon Oaks with our 1st Annual Field Trip Coffee Fundraiser. 

Fundraising packets were sent home last week.  Students selling a minimum of three boxes will be entered in a drawing for gift cards from Game Stop, Best Buy, and Toys R Us (each classroom).

Additional teacher incentives will be given to those classrooms with high participation.

The fundraiser continues through Wednesday, April 4th.  Orders will be delivered to school by April 25.  Checks can be made payable to Canyon Oaks PTO.


This Wednesday, March 21 is our monthly Walk and Roll event.

To encourage high participation, all participants will receive a raffle ticket to be entered in a drawing for one of two gift cards, and a third winner will win a brand new bicycle and helmet!

The classroom trophy presentation (the Golden Sneaker Award) for the highest class participation, and the raffle drawing will take place the week we return from Spring Break.


There will be a BEST assembly this Thursday, March 22.

The K-2 assembly will take place from 8:25 – 8:40 and the 3-5 assembly from 8:45 – 9:00 a.m.


Many of our 5th grade students will be at Outdoor Education this week at Walker Creek Ranch in Petaluma. 

Students will depart at 9:30 a.m. Monday morning, and return around 3:00 p.m. on Thursday (return time subject to change).

Dear COES Families,

This week we continue our Pennies for Patients drive. We are asking students to donate the following coin(s) each day:

Monday – penny

Tuesday – nickel

Wednesday – dime

Thursday – quarter

Friday – half-dollar

Your participation in this worthy program is greatly appreciated!


Report Cards were sent home last Friday, March 9.

If you did not receive your child’s report card, please contact your child’s teacher.


This Wednesday, March 14th is Spring Picture Day. 

Lifetouch will be in the Multi-Use Room Wednesday morning if you wish to purchase a photo package for your child. 


This Wednesday, March 14th is also the deadline to submit your intent to participate in the Science Fair Extravaganza this May.

A packet went home last Friday to all families who not attend the parent night last week.

Not listed is here is a helpful guide to assist your child in developing a project.  Participation in this event is voluntary and will not be reflected on your child’s report card.

More information will be shared with all participants prior to spring break.


Please consider nominating one of our outstanding teachers for Napa County Teacher of the Year.

Week of March 5, 2012

Dear COES Families,

We have several events taking place this week:

Our 4th graders begin the STAR testing season with the CST writing assessment this Tuesday, March 6.  The test will be given first thing in the morning, so it important all 4th graders are present and on-time on Tuesday.

The only day for make-ups is Wednesday, March 7.

We know our 4th graders will give their BEST effort on this important writing test. 


Also on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Multi-Use Room is our next English Language Advisory Committee meeting. 

The American Canyon Police Department will be giving a presentation on gang awareness.  This meeting is open to all American Canyon E.L.A.C.s


On Wednesday evening, March 7th,  we will hold a parent information night for our 1st Canyon Oaks  Science Fair Extravaganza.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in the Multi-Use Room.  Parents will receive tips on how to support your child’s participation at this event on Wednesday, May 30.

Student participation is voluntary, and will be completed outside of school hours. A letter of interest will go home to all students this week.


On Thursday evening, March 8th is our next P.T.O meeting.  Please note we have removed the after school meeting due to low turnout.  The evening meeting will take place at 6 p.m.


On Friday, March 9th, trimester 2 report cards will be sent home.

Dear COES Families,

This Monday is the first day of Trimester 3!

Report cards for Trimester 2 will be sent home on Friday, March 9.


The District Writing Assessment will take place on Tuesday, February 28. 

All students in grades 2-5 will be asked to write a paragraph (or multi-paragraph) response to a given prompt.

Students have been working hard these past several weeks in prepartion for this test, and we know they will give their BEST effort.

Kindergarten and 1st grade students will take their writing assessment on April 17.

Additionally, 4th grade students begin STAR testing next Tuesday, March 6 when they take the CST writing test.

STAR testing for students in grades 2-5 (language arts and math) take place at the end of April.


There is no school this Friday, March 2.

Originally scheduled as a teacher professsional development day, teachers will also now be off this day due to budget cuts.


Please join us this Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday at Pasta Pomodoro in Vallejo.

Fliers were sent home last week. If you cannot locate yours, pick one up in the school office, or download a copy on the home page by clicking on the heading link.

You may dine-in or take-out, and you may visit on more than one occassion over these next three days.

Thank you to our friends from American Canyon Community Church.

Last Saturday they were here flufffing our three bark boxes, painted room numbers on the blacktop for fire drill line-up, weeded our garden boxes, and created new signage to keep everyone safe in the front parking lot. 

We thank Pastor Matt Real for coordinating this event, and a special thank you to our students and staff who particiapted.


Also this week is our Site Council training workshop at American Canyon High (Tuesday from 6-9 p.m., dinner included).

Interested site council members may RSVP to Mr. Knox.


Our February BEST assembly was postponed to this Thursday, March 1. 

Room 12 & 13 will give a BEST performance, and the Golden Sneaker Trophy will be presented.

Dear COES Families,

I hope you all enjoyed the Presidents’ Day weekend!

This Wednesday, February 22 is Walk & Roll Day.  Students are encouraged to walk or ride their bicycles or scooters to school. 

The class with the highest participation will win the Golden Sneaker Trophy at this Friday’s BEST Assembly.

The BEST assembly on Friday, February 24 is from 8:25 – 8:40 (Kindergarten - Grade 2), and 8:45 – 9:00 a.m. (Grades 3-5).


Our next School Site Council meeting takes place this Thursday, February 23 at 3:00 p.m. in the school library.

We will be approving our annual school improvement plan, and address areas of need for our school.


Trimester 2 officially ends this Friday.  Report cards will go home on Friday, March 9.


The Read-a-Thon continues this week through next Sunday.

Please have your child record his/her reading time every day and try to solicit at least one pledge.

The American Canyon Community Church will be sponsoring a campus clean-up day this Saturday, February 25 from 8 a.m. – 12 noon.

All school community members are welcome to come out and help make our school shine!


Last, please join us for our Dine and Donate next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at Pasta Pomodoro in Vallejo.

Please consider visiting the restaurant at least once over the three-day period.  The promotion is good for dine-in or take-out.

When you present your flier, 20% of your purchase will be donated back to Canyon Oaks. 

A portion of the proceeds will purchase supplies for our new classroom emergency backpacks.

Dear COES Families,

This is the first week of (3) four-day school weeks. 

Next Monday, February 20 is Presidents’ Day, and Friday, March 2 is a non-student day (originally scheduled as a teacher professional development day).

Despite these short weeks, we are conducting a variety of district assessments at all grade levels as we near the end of Trimester 2. 

Please review our school calendar for dates and details.


5th grade parents whose students will be attending Outdoor Education will want to attend the Parent Information Night this Wednesday, February 15 in the Multi-Use Room.

The meeting will take place from 6:00 – 6:30 p.m. (Parent chaperones – please arrive for a brief orientation from 5:45 – 6:00 p.m.).

A representative from Walker Creek Ranch (Petaluma) will be on-hand to present camp information and answer your questions.


Our next Dine-and-Donate event takes place at Pasta Pomodoro in Vallejo.

Dear COES Families,

This week kicks-off our Read-a-Thon.  Blue fliers, including a reading log pledge sheet, were sent home last Friday. Please make sure your child received this in his/her Friday envelope.

We are aiming for 100% participation!

The Read-a-Thon runs through February 26.


Parents of English Learners are encouraged to join us for our English Learner Advisory Committee Meeting this Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in the Multi-Use Room. 

Childcare will be available.

Families attending will receive their child’s CELDT scores, and learn the process to help students become reclassified as fluent English proficient.

Additionally, all American Canyon ELACs (elementary, middle, and high) will be on hand to provide suggestions and feedback to the District ELAC committee. 

These suggestions, will then be forwarding to the District Governing Board.


Our next P.T.O. meeting takes place this Thursday, February 9 at 2:30 and 6:00 p.m.

The 2:30 meeting will take place in Room 26, and the 6:00 p.m. meeting (changed from the previous 7:00 p.m. start time) will take place in the staff room.

Topics discussed will include planning for the upcoming Spring Arts Festival, taking place Saturday, May 19.

We need lots of volunteers for the Arts Festival, so please join us on Thursday!


As a reminder, there is no school next Monday, February 13 in honor of Lincoln’s Birthday.

Dear COES Families,

This Wednesday, February 1st, is the first day of Kindergarten Registration and Open Enrollment. 

Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Multi-Use Room.

The line will form at the side gate along White Oak Drive, where students enter and exit campus.

At 9:00 a.m., parents will enter the Multi-Use Room, and a brief review of the required documentation will be given. 

The registration process will be first come, first served. 

Kindergarten registration will continue through the end of the school year. 

Families must live within Canyon Oaks’ boundaries, and your child must be 5 years old on or before November 1, 2012. 

Students born November 2 – December 2, 2012 may register for Transitional Kindergarten.  However at this time, Transitional Kindergarten is not slated to be funded for 2012-2013.  

Nonetheless, we will be accepting Transition Kindergarten registration in the event state funding for this program is realized.

Required documents for Kindergarten Registration:

1. Parent picture ID, with current address plus two residency documents or Caregiver Affidavit (if applicable)

  • Proof of residence may include paycheck stub, phone bill, PG & E bill, cable bill, tax forms, etc.  Mortgage and bank statements will not be accepted.
  • Documents must be current (within last 30 days).
  • If living with a family member, a residency affidavit must be completed.  The homeowner will need to be present and both the parent and homeowner must verify residency as described above.

2. Student’s birth certificate, original or certified

3. Emergency contact information, including health care provider contact information

4. Immunization records

Please note: Your registration will not be complete until all documentation is verified. 

It is imperative families come prepared with all necessary paperwork at time of registration.

We anticipate full capacity in 2012-2013. There is a possibility some new enrollees (K-5) may be overflowed to another American Canyon campus.

Open Enrollment requests will be accepted through February 24.  This option is available for any family (K-5) wishing to attend another NVUSD school in 2012-2013.

Dear COES Families,

This Wednesday is our next “Walk and Roll” event.  Students are encouraged to walk or ride their bicycles or scooters to school.  The event will take place rain or shine.

The classroom with the highest participation will win the Golden Sneaker trophy at this Friday’s BEST assembly.


This Thursday we have two events: School Site Council takes place at 3 p.m. in the school library.  Family and community members are welcome to attend.

On Thursday evening, there will be a community presentation on Bullying and Cyberbullying.  The event will be held at the Donaldson Way Elementary Multi-Use Room at 7:00 p.m.

The targeted audience is families of upper elementary grade students, middle and high school students.

This Friday is “Snow Day”. Students are encouraged to dress in blue and white for this school spirit day.

The BEST assembly takes place from 8:25 – 8:40 a.m. for grades K-2, and 8:45 – 9:00 a.m. for grades 3-5.
